Ukranian Christmas Carols
I'll buy any old record that has a Detroit address on it. I'm a sucker, through and through. 99% of the time they're garbage...but garbage I'm cool with, assembling some long and incoherent, non-linear history of the recorded legacy of the city.
But maybe once a year, a record turns up that is so unique, so sublime, so one-of-a-kind that it truly amazes me. I'd thought that this record would be a big throated boring chorus styled schlocky thing.
Instead, it is incredibly soothing, tasteful, non-Christmas sounding Christmas carols without ANY vocal accompaniment. The seemingly left-field inclusion of synthesizers here could have meant a recipe for disaster, but the end result is just lip-smackingly sleek. Jaunty even.
I want to listen to this record all of the time. This is the best ten dollars I've spent on a piece of vinyl in a long time. Good luck finding a copy? I need to make a transfer to share with the rest of the world. Push me on this one, I will share, I promise.
