BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK
Link Wray
Jack The Ripper b/w Black Widow
As over-leveraged your stereotypical rockabilly garage blowhard is to be expected about the genius of Link Wray...those guys (and let's be honest, they're ALL guys) aren't wrong.

A perfunctory "toss it in the basket" add-on for a recent batch of singles purchased from an individual seller on eBay, this record is just TOO good for this earth. And to be upfront about it, my intro to the A-side was very clearly a Yo Quiero Taco Bell commercial from 1998, replete with tasteful if not confusing guitar overdubs...

The amount of swagger embedded within these grooves is incalculable. Just...attitude for days. And titling an instrumental song after a serial killer? Impressive now, let alone 1963!
Everyone has a better day...with just a little bit of Link Wray.

Yo Quiero’ Link Wray Jack the Ripper

I was reminded recently of this insane version of Rumble, such heavy distortion for 1974:

Ben, I see occasional references to the White Stripes covering Link Wray’s Jack the Ripper and I always assume those folks are just confused and never heard Jack mention Screaming Lord Sutch. But did the band ever play this version? And, thanks for making our day better with this.
