Down in Mexico b/w Turtle Dovin'
I've got a bone to pick with the narrative surrounding the Coasters and their recorded catalog.
I swear to god, it seems like every contextualization I read about the group summarily writes them off as a "novelty" or funny/comedy group.
I mean...really? Granted, I wasn't around in the 1950's, but I've listened to pretty much all of their music and I've never really laughed. Maybe that's just me though.
Anyway, I absolutely adore just about everything the Coasters ever did and the Leiber/Stoller team is arguably the best songwriting duo ever not named Lennon/McCartney.
Since picking this up in Detroit last week I've been singing the song to myself every day. Kinda all I need to know in regards to the staying power of this jam. Makes me wanna go to Mexico.

This song is also featured on “Quentin Tarantino’s “Death Proof” (Original Soundtrack)” which was just Reissued on a Limited Edition Tri-Colour vinyl before Christmas.
A great song I’m eagerly looking forward to listening to when I get around to picking this album up. It’s on my list….just have to finish paying for that new Vault release first… limited vinyl budget choices…sigh!
Not vinyl, but this is a great collection, which includes both of these songs.
