Driftless Dreamers: In Cuca Country
scum stats: a limited number on glacier blue, rest on black
Any archival released focused on a specific geographic location who's liner notes START with the description of a glacier's path through said region tens of thousands of years ago...you know you're getting the good shit.
I could wax rhapsodic here, but all you need to know is that this survey of gems recorded in the Wisconsin studios of Cuca Records is downright charming. From literal field recordings of birds, through polka professionals and amateurs with nothing else but a song and a dream...this record encapsulates just about everything I love about the compilation form...most of all, teaching me about something I was previously just about ignorant of. Dig in.

That is a very eclectic and interesting mix of styles and music. Different parts of it reminded me of different eras in music. It also reminded me a little of one of my favourite soundtracks “O Brother Where Art Thou”. I could just as easily put on an album of just the bird call tracks for, in the dead of a Northern January winters day, when the birds have largelyl gone AWOL – close my eyes and dream of spring.
