BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK
Mother Estella Boyd

scum stats: no evidence of this thing out there aside from this one copy in my possession

Gospel records are a necessary evil.

As an archivist of Detroit records, these things are a dime a dozen. Most of them are completely unremarkable and there's no visible way to determine otherwise. You just need to drop the needle and turn your ear.

I find it intriguingly odd so many areligious (unreligious?) middle-aged white guys are deep experts on the intricacies and permutations of Protestant sects for the mere musical record collecting clout nestled within. Collateral knowledge I guess.

Like why do I know anything about the Church of God in Christ? Because Reverend Drayton recorded the otherworldly "By And By" on the C.O.G.I.C. record label and it caused me to track down everything else they put out, had me plot out points on a map based on the street address of said label/church and work to

On the surface, sermon LPs are the second lowest rung of the ladder above "white" in the measure of excitement gleaned from gospel records...as reading or recitation of a sermon can get snooze-a-delic in about three revolutions.

Mother Estella Boyd stands separate though. Amidst the speaking, punctuating like air like ten thousand swords simultaneously piercing a bolt of lightning, pure guttural ROARS of exaltation recorded in just low enough fidelity that the degraded audio quality actually better serves the material. In one word...perfect.

More / better screams than any rock and roll record I can name off the top of my head. No qualifiers, no cap. You wanna hear what a voice should sound like, look no further. You'll just have to look HARD cause this one is as rare as a rich man getting into heaven.
