BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

Normal Community High School Experimental Ensemble

A Moment of Yet

scum stats: 100 copies claimed, bold, but respectable

The fact that a public high school in Normal, Illinois has an experimental music ensemble is enough reason to hope for the future of the world. And the fact they put out an LP limited to 100 copies? As an avid supporter and collector of such institutional releases....sign me up.

What strikes me most about the music here is the subtlety, which, if you've been around any teenagers in the past five decades, you can attest that is not a frequently occurring trait. There's nary a whisper or anger or angst or aggression...which all felt pretty part and parcel to the firsthand adolescent experience back in mid-Nineties.

But I'm all for the changing of expectations and norms (get it?) and really champion this inside and out. The broad ambient strokes and languid progressions, dare I call it that, feels like what happens when a particular cohort has lived their whole lives with the entirety of recorded music history at their fingertips.

Shit will get weirder, younger, and this is the world I choose to live and and hope to flourish.

Get this before it's gone.
