BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

Kelley Stoltz

"When I Look In Your Eyes" b/w "Inhaling/Exhaling"

scum stats: limited to 250 hand-numbered copies (mine is copy 250 woohoo)

Across his 25 years of releasing music in the business, Kelley Stoltz has yet to release a dud. A new Stoltz platter, whether it be a single or an LP, brings to mind the consistency of the swallows returning to Capistrano. So reliable he is you can set your watch to him.

A-side here is motorik-style rhythm with underpinning reedy synth melody line before (pre?)chorus change grabs hold for the variation necessary to prevent all from sinking into unkempt repetition. Vaguely reminiscent of his songs "Keeping The Flame" and "Mt. Fuji" without being rehash or retread. Quintessential Stoltz.

B-side features the one and only Jason Falkner on electric guitar swells against Kelley's elegiac piano figures reminiscent of late-era Beatles. A ballad softly will entertain nicely, if that's your sort of thing.

The sleeve is a sturdy cardboard construction, all beautiful and letterpressed and the same general colors and themes as depicted on the Detroit Devil's Night poster framed above my head. A synchronicity and wholly welcome, as connecting with Kelley Stoltz is a forever blessing. Grab one before you can't grab no more.
