BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

Charlie Rich

I Hear Those Blues - Rich In Stereo

I don't know too much about Charlie Rich, but I do know that Sam Phillips LOVED him and there's a significant chunk of the Guralnick bio of Sam dedicated to the work those guys did at Sun. But I have to say, the original version of "Midnite Blues" a song that was introduced to me via the magnificent version by the Detroit Cobras, well, it alone is worth the price of admission here.

A twinge of Elvis vocal swang with a kicking bass groove...perfect in every way.

I would've thought that I'd crossed paths with a 7-inch copy by this point, the "original versions of songs the Cobras covered" being a strong go-to rule of purchase for near-on 25 years now. But the LP will suffice for now.

Can vault subscribers expect any sort of unnamed (or no name) LP in the near future?

Brian W.

Word’s out! The boss secretly slipped shoppers a sampler of his new stuff. Acknowledge!

One of his better discs! I like his older stuff but he became more “country” in the 70’s. Not bad country but not as good as his early releases. Great pick for Record of the Week!!!

What else is going on over there today?

Something here keeps throwing my brain back to Sam Cooke. " Midnite Blues", I like it.
