BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

MSSV

The Scott Aicher EP

scum stats: five different versions totaling only 300 copies, mine is on blue vinyl

Mike Watt is the secret hero of the past thirty years of rock and roll and if he's ever stopped or slowed down, you can't really tell.

MSSV is his group with Stephen Hodges and Mike Baggetta that exists in a quasi free form no fucks given sort of way. Four songs here are all over the place in a good way, guest vocals from Petra Haden always a plus. My preference lands on "Button Pusher" with a ranting madman fronting Brain Salad Surgery ELP in a tasty, groove complacent manner.

The art spares no expense...gatefold sleeve with each panel clearly a depiction of a character embodying the song title. I got all old man last week describing to a coworker that singles used to be $3. I see them nowadays for upwards of $15 and...well, in instances like this I get it. Long live the 7-inch single.

Huge MSSV fan here! Saw them at the Ottobar Baltimore a few weeks ago and they are simply amazing, a good time had by all. I this this and anything MSSV I can get my hands on. Great post!

Singles just aren’t made enough, sometimes it’s very fun to have a little disc with an awesome cover design and you can take 5-10 minutes to listen to something else in between albums ect. Wish more artists released singles
