BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

The Royal Playboys

Arabia b/w Bring It Back

scum stats: two versions…and I’ve got the one I don’t like. this is trouble.

Instrumentals! What a beautiful world, always ripe for more discovery and rabbit holing.

Apparently there’s a “vocal” version of “Arabia” but this vocal-less one is where it’s at. Twisty, saxy, smiley good time vibes for the world over. Seems like it would be perfect on a volume of Las Vegas Grind or Mad Mike’s Moldy Oldies. You folks know that series? We’ll talk about it some other time, it’s a lengthy yarn, but oh so good and inspiring.

Flipside is produced by Detroit ace Dennis Coffey, one of his earliest wax outings, and is much more in the “tuff” garage realm, even with what sounds like an acoustic guitar as the lead instrument. A solid two-sider. Not sure what this goes for usually, probably not cheap, but grooves for days.

“Arabia” made me think of ‘60s surf rock and an old Songza playlist I used to listen to called “Space Age Bachelor Pad.” I could listen to music like that for hours, vocals or not. “Bring It Back” is a great complement. I’d be flipping this 45 all day. Thanks for sharing!

Yes, WeeBee, I am somewhat familiar with that album :)

If you like saxophone give T Rex Tanx album a chance listen the sound is fantastic like a firey kite in the dead of night bare feet on a cold empty street hope that ain’t your fate just couldn’t stay away

If you love hot sax, Petz, I recommend Mustard Plug—Evil Doers Beware (Exclusive ketchup/mayo/mustard tri, of course).

I got into the Las Vegas Grind series for the Daniel Clowes cover art. I stayed for the hot sax.
