BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

Cybotron

Clear b/w Industrial Lies

scum stats: Australian version with different center label, I’d guess 500 copies

I’m amazed at the LEGS this record had so early on. The fact that Festival (the Australian affiliate of the US label, Fantasy) saw fit to do a local release of this title speaks volumes to me.

Although I have more of an affinity for the self-released Cybotron titles (Alleys of Your Mind, Cosmic Cars) the fact that this track was sampled by both Poison Clan (“Shake Whatcha Mama Gave Ya”) and Missy Elliott (“Lose Control”) gives it cred beyond belief.

Juan tells a great story in an interview (that I can’t seem to find at the moment) about taking an old synthesizer of his in to get repaired and out of nowhere, the melody from “Clear” spit out of the machine, something like 25 years after he’d recorded it and thought it long gone.

A story like that just makes me happy in an indescribable way. As does this single.

This early Detroit techno makes me proud to be from Detroit. Used to go to the clubs as kid and trip out on all this suff in the late 80’s early 90’s… great stuff. You guys should start reissuing techno!

this one stunned. Took a few days off. My deceased other owned a car audio shop in east nashville, (back when that was cool and east nashville was rough) we went to many car-audio competitions, and used Cybotron often to display the system’s clarity, bass… general rock yer socks-off-ness. (hearing) this has caused me to feel very mortal, thin, transient, to realize again the delicate thread we hang by though we don’t know it, until our health fails. Funny how this rises again, this music saved in vinyl grooves, and the strength of emotion it can cause. It seems like another life altogether, not mine. But it was. A photo album is one thing to reminisce on, but it pales in comparison to what emotion music can evoke. Again it occurs to me here, music is very, very, very important; much more so than I often realize. Smile and say hello to a stranger today, connect outside of your box

This makes me feel like battling my son!!! Even though he is far more advanced in some of the stuff his young thin self is able to do. ? Oh to be young thin and have a plethora of talent as he does!!!?

I’ve listened to “Lose Control” more times than I can count, but never looked into whether any of it was sampled. Now Cybotron is a new favorite, especially “Alleys Of Your Mind.” Thanks for sharing!
