BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK + 7" GIVEAWAY

Mattiel

“Count Your Blessings” b/w “Whites of Their Eyes”

Burger Records

white vinyl…limited? eh, I don’t know. It’s sold out on her Bandcamp. Black vinyl still available

Another flat out stunner, proof positive that there’s never a shortage of compelling music out there.

Was hipped to this by the Burger Records mailing list. Burger puts out SO MUCH STUFF that it is incredibly hard to parse. My simplified way of doing so is only paying attention to what they put out on vinyl and that seems to work for me.

The video dropped into the email list is for “Whites of Their Eyes” and shows suitable artistry coupled with a four-on-the-floor glam basic drum attack with trebly fuzz attack. Seems like it should be commonplace and easy to do, but based on the number of records that cross my desk that disappoint, well, there’s a disconnect somewhere. Combined with an interesting video…man, my time at TMR has only heightened my awareness that an INTERESTING video is increasingly difficult to do. When the audio and visual both knock it out of the park…bliss.

I immediately went to the Burger website and ordered the single. I emailed my wife and said “I think you’d really like this artist…seems like she could be your missing twin cousin"

Her response, hours later, was “you’re right.”

Early Monday a 12” mailer arrives from Burger.

“Wow, quick arrival,” I think to myself, "not the kind of delivery I was expecting from Burger.”

I open it up to find the following message…

“Hey Ben!

Hope all is well!

I’m send you & Jack a present. Mattiel met Jack a while back & she cites his influence w/press

We really want y’all & the world to enjoy! Thank you for caring much love & respect!!!

xo, Lee Rickard”

Inside the package was two copies of the Mattiel single and two copies of the test pressing of her LP.

Burger sent all of this before I’d even HEARD the music, and the instant I had heard the music, I bought it, not knowing that it was already on its way to me for free.

Clearly, this is destiny.

And the a-side is solid, light Winehouse soulful vibes with tasteful horn accoutrements. There’s a Jonah Swilley in the credits and I’m curious as to whether or not he’s the brother of Jared from the Black Lips. The production here is aces, really helps keep this from veering off to pastiche which is a bigger challenge than one may think. You don’t just put on a black tie and all of a sudden have credibility working R&B music. There’s a bit more to it than that.

Overall, a crazy good two-sider further re-affirming my faith in the youth and the rock and roll underground. Also, old-style tip-on sleeve for a 7” shows that someone out there cares. This thing FEELS important on top of actually BEING important.

So since I’m now flush with extra copies of the single, let’s do a contest below. Post a comment. Best one wins a copy of the 7-inch mailed directly to their home or place of business. “Best” is completely subjective to me.

My Grandmother actually had the ‘Cooking With Soup’ cookbook. Yes, I’ve tasted many of those recipes.

You look like Owen Wilson in this photo. Wow.

We knew you loved her before you even knew her!

She’s one classy chic. Thanks for putting all these on here to see. I know they are on You Tube, but I probably would’ve never found them. Count Your Blessings sounds like it should be in a Quentin Tarantino movie. Peace Ben.

I like soup.

Sweet. Have them as your cover band. Go Jack go!

An instant before the Sun’s disk is completely covered by the Moon, you should experience the visually stunning diamond ring effect. The slight bit of Sun remaining will give the impression of a brilliant diamond with the ring being a faint glow around the darkened Moon. Some images of the diamond ring effect can be seen at this link: https://sunstopper.wordpress.com/tag/diamond-ring-effect/
IMPORTANT NOTE: The brief few minutes of totality is the only time it is safe to look directly at the Sun with no eye protection. If you are wearing special eclipse glasses, take them off when the Moon completely covers the Sun. But be sure to put them back on if you continue looking at the sun as soon as totality is finished.
It will become dark as night during totality. The stars will pop out and you will see two very bright points of light near the Sun. They are really the planets Venus and Mercury. Most people never get to see Mercury because it is usually so close to the Sun that it is blotted out by the Sun’s glare.
Mars and Jupiter will make an appearance. Those two planets will seem to be near the Sun, when in reality they will be much farther away on the far opposite sides of their orbits. In total, 4 of the 5 planets that don’t require a telescope can be seen during the eclipse.
Sirius, the Dog Star, will show itself as the very bright star to the southwest of the Sun. In fact Sirius is the second brightest star in our sky after the Sun.
If we are lucky, there will be eruptions from the Sun that cannot be seen at any other time. These eruptions are called prominences and will glow a bright beautiful ruby red color. Go here to see a photo of red prominence eruptions during an eclipse: http://county10.com/will-wildlife-be-fooled-into-bedding-down-for-the-night-during-the-eclipse/
The bluish white glowing corona (outer atmosphere of the Sun) is made of charged hydrogen atoms; AKA plasma. During totality, the corona allows us to see the beautiful structure of the Sun’s powerful magnetic field as the plasma is pulled by magnetism into graceful curving field lines. Check out this gorgeous corona photo: http://www.zam.fme.vutbr.cz/~druck/eclipse/Ecl2013g/TSE_2013wa_ed/0-info.htm. As pretty as this image is, no photo can capture the almost ethereal fluorescent hue that you will see when looking directly at the corona. Also, notice that you can see red prominences in this image near the bottom of the Sun. http://astromaven.blogspot.com/2017/06/weird-things-happen-with-total-solar_72.html?m=1

Speaking of abstract time… this video ….. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MVL5ylN3ffY … or this video …. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=l5QcGChLH9A …. its that distortion that we cant live without

c-oops

What do philosophers and drummers have in common?

They both perceive time as an abstract concept
