BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

Experiment in Sound

self-released

scum stats: no idea

Rather than try to put this into my own words, I feel like the words that inspired me to buy this are better than I could ever muster. Direct from the Waxidermy message board…

"i met this guy harold at the flea market and am helping him sell his self released records online they are a collaboration with his son jason who was killed in a car crash a few years back he pressed up these recordings of them jamming in the early '00s as a tribute harold plays very early funkadelic inspired guitar drones and there a few nice long solo cuts in that vein then on the rest jason's beats back him up everything is very diy - generic die cut sleeve stuffed with assorted photocopied inserts that vary from copy to copy - it is cool and seems like something that would appeal here shop.parkblvdrecords.com"

In addition to…

"according to harold if you listen carefully you can hear his daughter shouting MOM SAID TURN IT DOWN buried somewhere in the mix"

These stories alone is reason enough to buy, but there’s something here, something I cannot put my finger on, a depth perhaps, that makes this just perfect to zone out to. Inspired listening for sure.

While the girls and I have experimented a little bit trying to make music together, I eagerly anticipate a time when we can communicate ideas to each other in a creative process. Creating art with your offspring…that sounds beautiful.

Mine just arrived in the mail today. Can’t wait to spin this over the weekend. I created an entry on discogs.com so you can add this to your collection if you are so inclined.

@erin_edz, my little guy just started liking watching records too lol, live music is memorable, vinyl is tangible music which is what makes it cool, it can be art like that album Ben has there, but yeah I agree taking kids to see things is like pressing a super vibrant vinyl in their minds forever, I can’t wait to take my younger brother to see Jack, first time for both of us going to any big concert, this August in Oregon, we don’t get too many live acts in the part of the PNW we live in. It’s either Portland or Seattle 4 hours to both. Good record stores in both cities to hit while we are there adds to it now that TMR has started me back on collecting records.

Very cool. I started taking my son to shows when he was 10. At 11 he got his own taste for music and at 12 I got him a Fender acoustic. I have an acoustic as well and two things I love doing with him are spinning records and playing guitar. Very cool

Very interesting, I think it’s time I try to discover some new bands, I feel like I need to drive to Seattle and just go to as many shows as I can one weekend and report on it. I’ve been out of this type of music for too long.

Annnnnnnd ordered. Can’t wait to spin it

The part about his daughter talking reminded of a little fact over the original mix of Hey Jude by The Beatles, when around 5m34s you can hear someone shouting “Pega o Cavaquinho” in brazilian Portuguese (that pretty much means “gimme the ukulele”).

Thank you for the story and good music. I listened and I enjoyed myself.

I really like this one, on so many levels. What a really great find. There is something there, drawing in, that cannot be explained. May have to search this one out myself. What a great story too. A+++ And I’m with you on the creating w/ offspring; something magic there I am finding out myself.. Anticipating the journey more each day, although I’m already on it.
