Joe Wong
Nite Creatures
scum stats: pre-orders came with a bonus 7-inch single
I get a lot of records sent here. That is no secret. I promise to listen to all of them. That is no secret.
I may never be able to listen to all of them. That is my secret.
But I still sit here encouraging folks to send me the fruits of their labor, oftentimes to just get tossed into a pile of perpetual inconsequence in my office. I am not proud of it.
I met Joe a few years back when he interviewed me for his podcast "The Trapset" where he exclusively interviews drummers. I had fun and took delight in making bad jokes about him just wanting to be Marc Maron.
I guess through it all, I had assumed he was a drummer, but didn't think much beyond that. So I was somewhat caught off-guard when he sent over his fanciful LP "Nite Creatures."
What a delightful listen...chock to the brim of true-to-form UK-influenced pop psych gems, just executed with perfection, not a bum moment here. The fact that this record is on Decca (one of the original premier purveyors of pop psych) is still blowing my mind. Add in guest appearances from Steven Drozd from Flaming Lips, Mary Timony, Anna Waronker and Mary Lattimore and this album is absolutely BONA FIDE.
Joe included two copies of the purple vinyl 45 of the title track (which is curiously NOT included on the album, a gimmick I dig now, as much as I did in 1997 when Foo Fighters did the same trick on their "The Colour And the Shape" LP) and so one of those will go to a lucky little freak here.
In the comments below, tell the best story of being caught off-guard or unexpected, or about a task you feel like you may never fully complete but you soldier on with anyway. Or just write whatever, I'm easy. I'll pick the winner and they'll get my spare copy of this 45. Can't beat that.
Putting my music collection on Discogs, not that I’m wanting to sell it. At least the TMR releases aren’t so bad. 500 versions of “Thriller” and then there is Dylan, Beatles etc., yikes. A task that may never see fruition.
@avery1103 – I watched it – good stuff! Cool way to support an awesome indie band that can’t be on the road.
Life has taken me off guard a lot. What a task. Oh well.
Hey, did anyone happen to check out The Ghost Wolves’Birthday show for Carley lastnight? They livestreamed 10 new songs with very creative, minimalist music videos that they shot themselves! You can still buy a ticket and access the feed, and it will totally be worth it!
I cruised into a bar on the shore: her picture graced the grime on the door. She’s a long lost love at first bite. Baby, maybe you’re wrong, but you know it’s all right (that’s right). Back stage, we were having the time of our lives, until somebody says, “Forgive me if I seem out of line.” Then, she whipped out a gun and tried to blow me away.
Three years ago I was sad, skinny, and shithoused in an arcade bar on high st. in columbus. i had ridden my bike to the bar and in my already inebriated state, kept my helmet on and joined the air hockey tournament. met a girl there, we talked briefly, then i continued to spiral into a tunnel of old crow whiskey shots and lost quarters to a series of air hockey games. i lost the tournament, but the city paper was there and i ended up smack on the cover of their entertainment section with a huge color picture of me and my plastered face in a helmet playing air hockey on a wednesday night.
i live with the girl i met that night now. she’s the prettiest thing on the planet.
unexpected.
I’ve been caught off guard about how TMR is the new Rhino Records for indie music.
“a task you feel like you may never fully complete but you soldier on with anyway” – I’m a French teacher, does that qualify?
My only comment is who in the world wouldn’t want to be Marc Maron!?? I aspire to be that f**king cool.
Iwas sitting here and can’t think of a thing that has caught me off-guard recently. Can’t think of a thing. Then I noticed you wrote this on September 11th. I remember watching the Today Show and they were showing that a “small plane” flew into one of the Twin Towers. As I watched, I saw the second plane hit the other tower live on TV. The realization that something very bad was happening hit me like nothing I’ve ever experienced. I would say many of us were caught off guard that day. @cromeet I’m so glad you are able to hear. That is my biggest fear to not be able to hear music. ?
Your secret of not being able to listen to all of the music thrown your way reminds me of the many items on my to do list to fix around the house and all of the shows/movies in my que for Netflix, Amazon and the like. I will never get to all of them just like I will never get to all the items on my fix it list (at least until I bite the bullet and call a professional). Thanks for your weekly posts on here. I always enjoy them.
