BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

Father John Misty

"To S." b/w "To R."

scum stats: Sub Pop Singles club, I don' t know if they've released quantities on this one, I'd expect roundabout 1200

Let's please share a round of applause for Sub Pop, as it seems like the most recent run of the Singles Club (installment #5) that they've finally optimized they're announce/release timing so as to actually get press and publicity on these sumbitches.

I have to say, if there is one consistent gripe I have about Vault packages...it's that they don't get reviewed. Yeah, we don't really send 'em out as promo to press, but also...I don't get any requests of these from the press. And yes, totally, us not making releases available digitally is not helping the situation.

But all of the sweat and toil going into subscription releases...across the board, they kinda just hang dead without even a modicum of reviewable press engagement.

So these FJM songs, they sound like you would imagine them to sound if you've listened to any of his music before. Crisp, dreamy production. Somewhat austere arrangements. If you've liked any of his previous work, you'll no doubt dig these. But on my end, years later I still feel like I can't get "Mr. Tillman" out of my head. That's my jam. That's what I want to hear.

Randoms :

- Who is S? Who is R? Is there any decent online conjecture about these?

- I'm bummed Sub Pop has shifted away from the brown die-cut slip covers for its Singles Club entries

- having been a loyal subscriber to the Singles Club since vol. 2, I cannot recall a time previously when I've received a record BEFORE the designated release month. Father John is the September 2020 release, but Guerilla Toss, the other single in the package, is the July 2020 release. What the fuck was the August release? I'm seeing other records from this volume with NO designation as to their release month. Surprisingly inconsistent from the otherwise sharp folks at Sub Pop.

- black vinyl? really?

Don’t have a clue who “R” is, but “S” is clearly Skeleton.

One theory is S and R are (S S & R R?) Skyler Skjelset and Robin Pecknold from Fleet Foxes, his ex-bandmates. Or Sean Pecknold and Robin Pecknold, since the whole Pecknold family is very involved with the band (Sean has directed most if not all of their videos, Aja, their sister is the band’s manager) and he was close to them too before he left the band.

Mine is still “In Transit, Arriving Late”. Ugh.

I was too disappointed by black vinyl. I know I saw an email stating they were behind, but FJM was ready to go so they were gonna release it early instead of skipping a month. I also didn’t love the brown sleeves, and am really happy with the box. I actually loved the L.O.T.I.O.N. single the best so far.

The Vaults get reviews all over the place via word of mouth. The boards are crawling with them! The fans dig ‘em and recruit more fans because of it – can’t go wrong ??

The Vault releases don’t really hang dead because of all the informal reviews flying back and forth between and among the recipients, on whose turntables they’re living their best life, and their friends (but I know what you’re saying).

I was disappointed about black vinal but the box was better then i expected. Also miss the slip covers too.
