BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

Terry

"Take the Cellphone" b/w "Debt and Deficit Disaster"

scum stats: what'd they do, 1000 of each of these Singles Club releases?

Literally just grabbed the record nearest my keyboard, no idea how long it's been there, when it came out, none of that shit.

Immediately upon music starting up on the a-side, I feel like I've heard this before. Definitely sounds familiar and NOT just because it is in the spirit of it's Aussie band brethren like Total Control, UV Race and Dick Diver, all groups which members of Terry have done time in.

It seems interesting that two band members are wearing cowboy hats in the single artwork. I really truly get NO cowboy hat vibes from this. Regardless, "Cellphone" is jaunty, sprite, a nice little workout that definitely ticks all the right boxes and leaves you feeling good. But yeah, if you dig any of that other Melbourne scene from the past couple of years, "Take the Cellphone" is yet another premier entry in the catalog.

B-side "Debt and Deficit Disaster" starts off with a long instrumental stretch, atmospheric, a repetitive seven note measure over and over and over again, about two minutes in you realize there's not gonna be any lyrics here. The final sixty seconds or so are more in the mood of guitar pedals futzing around, making digital footprints through the metaphorical modern mud, and finally a hand drum pattern that would've been PERFECT for a locked-groove.

And THAT is how you review a single in the exact amount of time it takes to listen to it.

This was one of the better singles in Volume 4.
