BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

Demolition Doll Rods

"I Wanna O.D." b/w "Dream"

I can't think of more than five other 7-inch singles I bought before "I Wanna OD."

Demolition Doll Rods were at the forefront of my underground introduction, age 14 cusping onto 15. I most likely bought the "Tasty" LP first and then scoured the bins of any local Detroit record shop I could trick my parents into driving me to trying to track down their 7"s. No doubt this one turned up first and thus probably the reason I fell in love with it.

The premise of the song is clever yet simple...a list of celebrities coupled with a trite line or two on how they passed, followed with a sing-songy chorus about how the singer too wanted to

overdose...rhyming "OD" with "history."

I played the shit outta this thing. When you only own a handful of records, you absorb them like a sponge absorbs water. Remarkably, it is a live recording, yet there's no sound of a crowd to be heard. I've visually confirmed the master tapes of the "Tasty" album show approximately 5 different takes of "OD" yet none have ever been released.

As much as I've personally tried, I'm not sure if the public will ever get to hear the studio version. In the grand scheme of things, I think this version holds up just fine.

Side note: what in the hell is that weird device on the cover? Looks like a combination tattoo gun and aerosol steampunk hand grenade. A treat to whomever can post a link to a google image that correctly correlates to whatever in the hell that object is.

It’s always great to look back at the songs and bands that you loved in your youth. They are the ones that stick to you forever.

I’m going to take a different approach and move to the kitchen… is this a vintage cookie press? Obviously trying to mimic an antique aspirating syringe. https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F124142373239 https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F362945740070

Hey Ben. It looks like a 19th century medical syringe – https://www.shutterstock.com/image-photo/old-medical-syringe-metal-nineteenth-century-229116436
I would agree that its common purpose is for embalming. A needle, called a trocar, is attached to the twin ends of the syringe to pump the fluid through the body. Creepy, but cool!

Yeah yeah yeah! Sick guitar!

Pretty sure that is an embalming tool… As seen here: https://gramho.com/media/1594224462314803578 and here: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/10485011605438668/
