BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

Spykes and Parashi

“Braille License Plates For Sullen Nights”

scum stats: limited to 200 copies, each with a unique, hand-screened cover

Sometimes I just miss my mid-2000’s going to three Michigan noise shows a year existence. This record is an appropriate reminder as to what that felt like.

The sounds themselves, outside of “reeds” are hard to approximate what exactly might be creating them. And the inability to pin them is refreshing in a “palms facing upward” emoji style. Removing the mechanism used to create the art is idea for thinking more about the art itself and not the process.

Dark vibes and what I once previously described as “digital dinosaur roars” permeate throughout. This has “Royal Oak basement” written all over it.

Side A is a tasty locked-groove ending, Side B is also a locked groove just a little more squelchy. All in all clearly not for everyone, but a palate cleanser that I am thankful for.

This is like a mix of the baby monitor picking up the aliens communicating from the movie Signs and the fan motor in my bathroom that is badly in need of some WD 40! It has a Banana duct taped to a wall sort of vibe.

I hear some Pere Ubu in there, I would guess they were fans? I can see this being fun night. I usually like my noise a little more melancholy like Suicide and was thrilled to catch Martin Rev Empty Bottle last year. and a great show by Thurston Moore this past December (dang he tall!)
