Angel Bat Dawid
“The Oracle”
scum stats: 333 copies on blue vinyl (what I grabbed), the rest are on black
Badass name. Badass album cover. Enlightening groove and instrumentation, I feel like I’m peeking in on something that’s been “there” all my life, but I’ve never had the presence of mind to just “look” at.
Guys…I’m falling further down this jazz hole. And I have to admit, I kinda like it. It ranges from tuneful and pleasant and inviting and downright accessible to exploratory, unrestrained, free jazz excursions. The best of both worlds.
Get this now and tell all your friends about it if you wanna act like you know something. Two thumbs-up. Must-buy. Don’t question, just act.
As described by the label, here’s some further insight…
For her recorded debut on International Anthem, The Oracle, we've chosen to release a batch of tracks that Angel created entirely alone – performing, overdubbing & mixing all instruments & voices by her self – recorded using only her cell phone in various locations, from London UK to Cape Town RSA, but primarily from her residency in the attic of the historic Radcliffe Hunter mansion in Bronzeville, Southside, Chicago.
listen to Jaimie Branch – Fly or Die II on the same label, I think this and Angel’s record will fight it out for my favorite Jazz record of the year. International Anthem is a fine label.
Solid mood on this one, digging it.

I’ve joined you in The Jazz Hole(Simpson’s reference) having recently donated to our local Jazz station WDCB run out of the College of DuPage and now purchased my first Jazz vinyl, assuming The Jazz Singer by Neil Diamond doesn’t count. The crystal blue vinyl is still available, the cassette, sold out. Thanks for the introduction!
