BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

The Gills “Lemonade” b/w “La-Di-Da"

Soul Step Records

I’ve been staring at this thing in my “listen to” box for what feels like FOREVER. I’m actually quite surprised to find out it was actually released this year. I see things in this box that I clearly bought in 2015, 2014 and shit…even earlier. I may have a problem. Neon green vinyl is eye-catching, the a-side appears to be PB (pre-Beyonce), I dig the change in drum pattern in each verse (from a Zeppy syncopation to straight ahead rock and roll 101) and the ending reminds me of prime “The Colour and the Shape”-era Foo Fighters. The b-side rides along the same vibe, but with a little less thunder, much in the way a b-side should…recalling some of the finer moments of Oasis at the height of their mastery of Brit-pop. Seems like there are some other interesting releases on the Soul Step website, I know the Matt Duncan “Soft Times” LP is kicking around in a pile here somewhere. Soul Step appears to be fighting the good fight…go on and check ‘em out at www.soulsteprecords.com

those were the days my friends … http://www.billboard.com/files/media/jack-white-with-blackwell-in-2000-billboard-510.jpg …. simple and honest

my theory is get the shelving units on wheels first chance you get and keep a portable ready to roll…. i have a really nice system that is still just stacked up in storage relative to me interest in moving to a city that makes sense to me…. obviously with Drumpf in line to the throne my choice of city may have me looking at some very unexpected locales….. hard to say if trying to go to shows in Nashville is even worth it anymore given that bands and acts which interest me most are not playing live anymore ….. Thanks for that tip though @thinkingcat i have one of those filers and its a win for certain

I’ll be checking them out. Love your honest straight forward writing style. @Appleblossom I’ve been having that same storage issue. Recently I got a flipbin just for what’s in rotation. Less stacks of random records lying around. Pricy but super solid and I love the colors. Don’t know if they are selling through a site yet or not. Got mine through their kickstarter.

NEvINS

I love it that you do this. Good to meet you this summer in Nashville.

I cranked this while driving today, and I thank you v v V much for this recommendation. Keep ’em coming, please!

I get the feeling that PB …. the artistic era formerly known as Pre-Beyonce may need some parameters which clarify NA (North American) or FB (Funk Ballad) to give listeners a sense of categorization which accurately defines the preordinate terms of JBI (James Brown Influenced) …. but maybe thats just me trying to find some neatly organized vinyl filing systems as my collection grows due to the influence of TMR in my archivistic tendencies….. I think it generally goes like this…. JBI….PBFB….. and then NAPB just for clarity’s sake …. of course there will likely be the PBS (Post Beyonce Sasha) erea where Beyonce lends herself to the Sasha state of mind

Please post recommendations like this more often! btw after the chat last week I now have “No Parking On the Dance Floor” in my jukebox and it’s great.

The Gills are great guys from Pensacola, FL. Now in Nashville. I used to hang out with them. They keep progressing which is fun to listen to. I’ve picked up a few Soulstep 7" this year and haven’t regretted it. Thanks Ben!

Thanks Ben… I think you keep us all moving forward!
