Posted by Third Man on 12 October 2012

Our vinyl wagon and mobile fun zone, The Rolling Record Store, is hitting the road again next week on it's way to New York City for the annual CMJ Festival. We'll have some limited edition items along for the ride, which we'll spread out among the different stops and all of the usual Rolling Record Store merchandise and records. You can find us here: @ThirdManRRS.

But hopefully the mere mention of Public Nuisance White Wall Triple Deckers, Jack White 'I'm Shakin' (free) posters, Rome Limited Edish LPs, and more rare TMR vinyl is enough to wet your record buying appetites...

  • News Roundup: Thank You Edition

Posted by Third Man on 8 October 2012

This past Saturday was a fantastic and historical day here at Third Man with The Shins visiting us and playing an intimate show for some hardcore fans that was recorded directly to acetate disc in our new vinyl mastering suite connected to our venue. A great big thanks to George Ingram from Nashville Record Production and Vance Powell and their crews for helping us make this dream happen on Saturday night by producing and running the machines and making sure it all ran like clockwork. And of course a thank you to The Shins and their whole crew for being such great sports and making the show as easy and as fun as it possibly could have been. They were the perfect band to help us launch this cool new system of recording live music, and Low Cut Connie weren't half bad either!

So, we are insanely over the moon excited to have The Kills coming up live this Wednesday, and again this live show will be recorded direct to acetate. Looking forward to having you all here for that (sold out) show. We'll get things started a little early on Wednesday with hot dog and burgers (with veggie options) for sale on our patio from 6:30 to 8:30. Doors for the show are at 7 and this show is 16 and up.

Again, we'll be taking pre-sales for Black and Blue split colored vinyl after the show for those in attendance. Please be sure to ask any of the helpful Third Man employees at the show if you've never joined us for a show before and aren't sure how this all works to get that vinyl! Oh, and we'll also have screen printed posters for the event available as well, designed in house by Julian Baker.

And last but most certainly not least... we don't want to forget to thank all the hard working guys and gals who have been here with us doing the actual construction on our new building, alleyway entrance, patio, and mastering studio over the past few months and helped make all of this possible. These guys all worked really hard and spared no detail and we're really indebted to their tireless work ethic and great attitudes. So please join us in a round of applause for our head contractors over at Sound Construction Inc and their team of folks listed below:

    THANK YOU
Sound Construction Inc, Don Davis Construction, 12 Street Painting, REI Concrete, John Guess Alarm, Rio Grande Fence Co, Russell Hall Plumbing, Russell Glass Company, Nashville Tent & Awning, DHC Air Conditioning, All American Hardware, Crawford Door Company, Nashville Fabricators, JKL Electric Company, American Flooring Epoxy Flooring, and Music City Masonry.

    Cheers everyone... see you Wednesday!

  • VAULT PACKAGE #14

Posted by Third Man on 6 October 2012

This has been an exciting year for us at Third Man with it being our 3 year anniversary and Blunderbuss being released and Jack White touring with two separate bands... So we'd like to celebrate all those good things with our next Vault package.

JACK WHITE LIVE AT THIRD MAN RECORDS DOUBLE LP
The LP for this quarter will be a double album recording of Jack's live show, and solo debut, at Third Man Records from our 3 Year Anniversary Party on March 8th of this year. LP one takes in the set with the band of all lovely ladies, The Peacocks, backing him up and LP two is the second set featuring The Buzzards. This is a fantastic and historical live document of Jack White and two fiery backing bands riding off the celebratory high spirits of the evening. The set took in classics from throughout Jack's career and showcased plenty of songs from Blunderbuss, which were heard for the first time that night for many. The LPs come housed in amazing packaging which will be a first for us... a Lenticular gatefold cover! For those of you who may not be well versed in multiple dimensions, the Lenticular cover will show two separate images, in one. What you see depends on how you hold the record or which angle you look at it. We'll spare you the Lacanian interpretation of the multiple imaged Jack and how these images represent the Id and Ego and the recorded product of course, the Super-Ego. Or using the Mirror Stage we can then look at The Real, The Symbolic and the... oh never mind. It looks incredible and you're going to absolutely want to display this cover prominently in your record room or mantle. The LPs, of course, will be pressed on split color Black & Blue vinyl.

JACK WHITE FREEDOM AT 21, LOVE INTERRUPTION, HYPOCRITICAL KISS DEMO 7"
The 7" for this package is very special indeed. Three Jack White bursts of inspiration captured in the moment only to be fleshed out in the studio later with a full backing band. These recordings were done on Jack's trusty field recorder, and give an intimate glimpse into his recording and songwriting process. The 7" of demos of Freedom At 21 B/W Love Interruption and Hypocritical Kiss will be pressed on signature Jack White Blunderblue vinyl.

BABY RUTHLESS SHARK INFESTED SODA FOUNTAIN
And onto the third item in this package, which is another first. After the last Dead Weather tour in 2010 (that is to say, the last they've done, not the last EVER tour...) Alison Mosshart self published a book titled Shark Infested Soda Fountain of her photos compiled from their adventures on the road as a gift to the other members of the band. Beyond every page being packed with beautiful ethereal photographs, when viewed as a complete work the book is a touching and one of a kind document to the unique love and camaraderie of the Dead Weather and the cast of characters that surrounded them in their international travels. Alison has been kind enough to allow us to reprint this book in it's entirety and share it with the members of The Vault and we are of course in turn, very excited for you to see it.

  • New Blog Entry PagThird Man Grand Re-Opening

Posted by Third Man on 2 October 2012

As any visitor to our Third Man record shop over the past few months could tell you, there's been a whole lotta construction goin on over at the Ol' Record Mill... We've been expandin', upgradin', face-liftin' and innovatin' left and right. If you thought Third Man HQ was cool before, just wait until you see it now. AND YOU WILL.

Starting in October all the construction will be done on our new building, old building, alley way and venue and we'll be re-opening our Live Venue to the public with some pretty great events all through the month of Rocktober.

Let's jump right into THE EVENTS... and then we'll talk about some of these exciting upgrades to the compound.

    OCTOBER 6th
Grand Re-opening with The Shins and Low Cut Connie

Did you hear that crack just then? That was your head splitting wide open from that incredible news that The Shins will be playing an intimate show here at Third Man Records in our Blue Room. What can we say about The Shins that hasn't already been said in miles of press. They're one of the best bands out there today and we're honored to have James Mercer and the band here to play live and record a live LP for us. Low Cut Connie's new album "Sylvia" is out now and getting rave reviews from Rolling Stone and all those other important music mags. We'll also have hot dogs and burgers (with veggie options if you're one of those types) available out on our new patio during the day - but more about the patio in a minute.

We're also going to celebrate by making the limited edition of The Public Nuisance re-issue available in our shop that morning from opening hours (11am). What is the limited edition of The Public Nuisance you ask? Only thesecond ever Triple Decker Vinyl ever made, which shall be known as The White Wall Triple Decker. We'll have 100 of these available on October 6th (50 from the shop and 50 from The Rolling Record Store). And we'll have another 100 available via the Rolling Record Store later in the month when it hits Richmond, Northampton, Philadelphia and New York City. We'll tell you all about that in the coming weeks, but wanted to mention it now so collectors can plan accordingly.

    OCTOBER 10th
    The Kills with Two Tears

I mean... what needs to be said about this one? This is a show we've wanted to see at Third Man since day Numero Uno. Jamie and Alison are two of the most talented and creative people we know... we're all massive fans and can't wait to have them rock our stage and commit to wax so we can finally have a release on the label by the one and only KILLS. If that wasn't exciting enough, word on the street is that they're bringing the Black Rooster Drum Corp along with them. Whoa Daddy!

Opening the show will be two piece rock n rollers, Two Tears.

    OCTOBER 23rd
    Films of Olivia Wyatt
Staring Into The Sun and The Pierced Heart & The Machete

Olivia Wyatt is a film maker and photographer based in Rockaway Beach, NY. On the 23rd we'll be presenting two of her films that have been released by the fantastic record label and collective, Sublime Frequencies. We are insanely excited to present the only Nashville screening of these modern day ethno-folk cinema classics. In Staring Into The Sun Olivia explores 13 different tribes throughout Ethiopia and takes in Zar spirit possession, Hamer tribal wedding ceremonies; wild hyena feedings and more in a blend of ethereal images, landscapes and sounds from the horn of Africa. The Pierced Heart And The Machete is a film exploring two Haitian Vodou religious pilgrimages that take place each year in mid-July. Both of these culturally and musically rich films are exactly the sort of front line and important sort of presentations that mean so much to us at Third Man. Really excited to have this screening at Third Man, the filmmaker, Olivia Wyatt, will be in attendance.

    OCTOBER 26th
    Seasick Steve with Promised Land

The dog Hisself joins us at Third Man for a rare Stateside live appearance. We're really pleased to have our old pal Steve back to Nashville to play a live show for us and the fans. Nobody, but nobody, rocks a Diddley Bow like Seasick Steve. This is a don't miss appearance from one of the greatest showmen working today.

Promised Land is a new-ish band from Nashville that mine the best from the Burritos and The Band and we know everyone is gonna love em.

The Shins, The Kills and Seasick Steve will all be recorded for Live At Third Man LPs, and Promised Land will be recorded for a live 45. Limited Edition Black & Blue split color vinyl Pre-Sales will be available for attendees only after each individual show.

    Now... about those upgrades.

The thing we are most excited about is our newly installed record cutting lathe and vinyl mastering suite that fans will be able to view from inside the Blue Room. The live experience will be greatly enhanced as fans can not only watch the live show but see the show being recorded, mixed and mastered LIVE to an acetate disc via the viewing window and a two camera monitor system. Making this the ONLY live to acetate venue in the world. Oh, and did we mention the lathe was once in residence at King Records in Cincinnati? That means records from anyone from James Brown, Hank Ballard, Charlie Feathers or any number of incredible artists could have been cut on this machine back in it's heyday. Maybe even the original 'I'm Shakin'" by Little Willie John! All the headline acts in October will be recorded using this new system. We can't wait for everyone to see it in action.

Since we've expanded our operations into the building next door we're finally happy to say that we have public restrooms available for attendants to our events in the Blue Room. To find the new restrooms, you just cross right over our new covered wooden patio where we'll feature grilled hot dogs on our grill for every show.

And check out the Third Man Rolling Record Store! It's now got it's very own Batcave...

The new building itself... well, we can't tell you everything that goes on in the new building (SECRETS!), but you can see from these tantalizing pictures that no detail has been spared and it is an aesthetically pleasing yellow tinted wonderland, and we all just love the new digs!

Come and see us this October. We've missed you!
