Wednesday July 17th Third Man Records will present a panel discussion focused on Detroit and the rock music that's come from the city from the past five decades. The first event of its kind at Third Man, it centers on the new book by Steve Miller titled Detroit Rock City an exhaustive oral history of the past fifty years of rock and roll in the Motor City. Panelists include...
— STEVE MILLER - noted true crime journalist and editor of the recent Touch and Go: The Complete Hardcore Punk ZIne '79-'83 and lead singer of early hardcore exemplars the Fix
— SCOTT RICHARDSON - lead singer and namesake of legendary Detroit band SRC
— JERRY VILE - lead singer of cartoon punk band the Boners and editor of a slew of Detroit-area 'zines and proper publications like White Noise, Fun, and Orbit
— BEN BLACKWELL - drummer for the Dirtbombs, head vinyl guy at Third Man Records, official White Stripes archivist
In addition to the discussion, there will also be a Q&A session as well as the sharing of impossibly-rare and previously unknown audio recordings and film footage from some of the most-loved and well-known bands discussed in the book. While we can't divulge exactly what we'll be sharing, we will have the strictest enforcement of our no photos/videos/recording policy to date.
Tickets ($5) are available at the door beginning at 6pm the night of the discussion, or online in advance HERE.

And now to the announcement of the latest Vault Platinum Package… lucky number 17. With all of the blood, sweat and tears that has gone on behind the scenes here to build the new Vault service it quickly became apparent to us there could only be one package that would be worthy of our inaugural offering under the new Vault banner.
One of the highlights of our year (so far) has been the esteemed honor of hosting country music legend Willie Nelson here at Third Man to celebrate his 80th birthday. On April 18th of this year Willie played a concert with some guest musicians, among them real life legacy artists, but also importantly, some handpicked sidemen from the house of Third Man. This special performance for CMTs prestigious Crossroads TV show was all caught and camera and broadcast. Behind the scenes, we were rolling tape on that historic show (as is Third Man's way) and every song (even those non-broadcast) was captured on beautiful, warm-sounding analog tape by our crack team of engineers. It was in many respects a perfect evening.
We are very proud to present one of the most heartwarming, intimate, and downright legendary shows we've ever had the pleasure of hosting within our walls. Ladies and Gentleman a big thank you to Mr. Willie Nelson and all of the amazing artists involved for the opportunity for us to present to you… The Vault Platinum Package #17.

This week we're doing something really special in our Blue Room at Third Man. We'll be presenting the first of what we hope to be many visual arts shows. Our inaugural presentation will feature works from a real hero and lifetime doer in the punk rock / rock n roll underground / overground world of everything that is positive and cool.. Mr Tim Kerr. Tim's works celebrate unity, self expression, progressive ideals and revolution of the spirit. His subject matter ranges from blues soul and jazz musicians, counter culture icons, civil rights activists and much more. We find his artwork very inspiring and are really looking forward to sharing Tim's world with you.

All three poets come to Nashville in support of new books. The TMR patio will be open from 4pm for drinks and dogs and doors open for Poetry Sucks! at 5pm. Here's some details on the performers for July 7th:
TIM KERR was a founding member of The Big Boys, Poison 13, Bad Mutha Goose, Lord High Fixers, and Monkey Wrench; all groups who have played an important role in what is known as the US indie scene today. Not only has he been inducted into the Texas Music Hall of Fame, but Tim also earned a degree in painting and photography at the University of Texas in Austin and studied the latter with Garry Winogrand. His artwork has shown in the US and abroad in galleries such as PS1 in New York, 96 Gillespie in London, Slowboy Gallery in Germany, and Hyde Park Art Center in Chicago. Tim may even join in the music making on the 7th!
SAMPSON STARKWEATHER was born in Pittsboro, NC. He is the author of the First Four Books of Sampson Starkweather and 5 chapbooks from dangerous small presses. He is a founding editor of Birds, LLC and works for The Center for the Humanities at The Graduate Center, CUNY.
PAIGE TAGGART lives in Brooklyn and is the author of 3 chapbooks. Trembling Pillow Press will publish her first full-length collection Want For Lion in late 2013/early 2014. She's an avid jeweler (mactaggartjewelry.com) and co-founded the tumblr Poets Touching Trees.
LARRY O. DEAN was born and raised in Flint, Michigan. His most recent books include Brief Nudity (Salmon Poetry, 2013), and Basic Cable Couplets (Silkworms Ink, 2012). Also a critically-acclaimed songwriter, Dean has numerous CD releases, including Fun with a Purpose (2009) with The Injured Parties. He was a 2004 recipient of the Gwendolyn Brooks Award.
LEE BAINS III and the Glory Fires’ debut album There is a Bomb in Gilead was released on Alive Records. Now, LBIII and The Glory Fires re-unite with Tim Kerr to record their next album in Nashville, TN with the legendary Jeremy Ferguson at Battle Tapes Recording Studio. Could there be a bigger bang?
HOLLY GOLIGHTLY kicked off her musical career in Thee Headcoatees, the legendary all-girl garage band, closely affiliated with U.K. cult legend Billy Childish. She released her first solo record, The Good Things, in 1995. Holly has also recorded with Rocket from the Crypt, White Stripes, Mudhoney, and on the title track for the Jim Jarmusch movie “Broken Flowers” with The Greenhornes. Holly Golightly and the Brokeoffs music is a lo-fi stew of blues, country and rockabilly, at once avant-garde and old-timey.
Oklahoma native JD McPherson and our favorite American music torchbearer Pokey LaFarge have teamed up to record a rendition of country swing legend Bob Wills' "Good Old Oklahoma," which they released today. You can take an exclusive first listen to their charming duet at ROLLINGSTONE.COM. 100% of the proceeds from the track will be donated to the Oklahoma City Community Fund's Tornado Relief endowment, which contributes to dozens of charities assisting relief efforts for those directly affected by the recent tornadoes.
McPherson explains how the recording came about: “Pokey and I had been speaking in the days following the May 19th tornadoes about the possibility of recording a benefit song. He came up with the brilliant idea to record Bob Wills' ‘Good Old Oklahoma’ as a duet. Pokey is from Missouri, but each time he plays in my home state, his band performs that tune and brings the house down. It was a perfect fit.”
"It's with great pleasure that I get to work with one of Oklahoma's finest, JD McPherson," adds LaFarge. "To be able to record this Bob Wills tune is all too fitting for a good cause. We hope this helps. We love Oklahoma!"
