At once blistering and poetic, the ravages of colonialism cast a dark shadow over the South American landscape in EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT, the third feature by Ciro Guerra. Filmed in stunning black-and-white, SERPENT centers on Karamakate, an Amazonian shaman and the last survivor of his people, and the two scientists who, over the course of 40 years, build a friendship with him. The film was inspired by the real-life journals of two explorers (Theodor Koch-Grünberg and Richard Evans Schultes) who traveled through the Colombian Amazon during the last century in search of the sacred and difficult-to-find psychedelic Yakruna plant. Martin is a young man who lives with his great uncle in the suburbs of Pittsburgh. He claims to be 84 years old, but people don’t believe him because he doesn’t look a day over 30. Martin wants to be normal, but he has a sickness. The only way he can survive is by drinking blood. Director George Romero’s modern take on classic vampire mythology and the intersection of superstition and psychology tears down the conventions of the genre while creating an entirely new, ultimately much more horrific tale where no magic lies in the myth. Only madness.

Filmmaker Joseph Bernard will present his films in person, followed by a Q&A.
In just the decade spanning 1975-1985, Joseph Bernard - painter, mixed-media artist, and former student of Stan Brackage - made over 100 works on 8mm film. Punctuated by an ever-shifting conceptual framework and Bernard's nomadic state of being, the films are as much kaleidoscopic abstractions of light and texture as they are personal expressions and a mode of self-inquiry - they dually create an ethereal space while invoking the specific locale of their creation (Detroit, Chicago, New York, and the salty oceanfront of Provincetown, MA) Following frustrations spurned by cost of materials, Bernard withdrew from filmmaking completely in 1985. As Phil Coldiron notes in a recent Cinema Scope feature on Bernard, "American experimental cinema is considerably poorer for both the brevity and obscurity of his career."
Now, after three decades of purgatory, Bernard's films have been resurrected and are enjoying a second life. The original 8mm masters have been digitally scanned and restored, and are receiving overdue praise and exhibition across the country. 40 of them have been assembled in a stunning Blu Ray retrospective, titled PRISMATIC MUSIC. Joseph has selected several of his works to be exhibited in two thematically distinct programs for Third Man Record's Nashville and Detroit locations. The screenings each offer a unique lineup and will be shown in four segments, prefaced by introductions from Bernard.
There are certain bands in this supersaturated, hyper-fragmented, temperamental internet era that rise above ephemeral popularity not because they perpetually reinvent themselves or stay ahead of trends or make headlines with crazy antics or write a mega hit or have a super dreamy frontperson... there are certain bands that rise above because of one characteristic that trumps all others: consistency. Woods is one of those bands, and their wheelhouse is a decidedly mellow blend of folk, psych, soul, and funk that's wise beyond its years in timbre and lyric. It's a comforting kind of music Woods makes. It doesn't take you anywhere you don't want to go, even if they world they depict is less and less hospitable with every passing day. It's a soundscape reflective of the world it was created in, and its lack of call-it-action and angst makes it endlessly listenable for those of us with regrettably overactive minds.
With over ten years and nine studio records under their belt, this Brooklyn band also runs their own label and 2-day festival at Big Sur, and has carved out a loyal legion of appreciators who extol their steadfast artistry and work ethic. We hope to see the Nashville Chapter of this legion, as well as a whole slew of new potential members, at their live taping in our Nashville Blue room, Monday May 2nd. If you have only heard his viral hit "Look at Wrist," you might be temped to lump FATHER in with other Atlanta purveyors of fine, original trap music — Young Thug, Rich Homie Quan, iLoveMakonnen, Future, etc — and you wouldn't be wrong, but you wouldn't be right either. While these artists are striking matches that keep the fireplace lit, Father and his Awful Records crew are burning the whole damn house down. Atlanta's hip hop scene is notorious for a lot of reasons — its stream of consciousness lyricism, its aesthetic risk-taking in an industry that rewards sticking to formula, its acceptance of its own strangeness, its drug culture, the sheer volume of incredible rappers that emerge from it, the fact that tastes are made, the agenda is set, the recipes are written HERE, and, of course, the fact that new artists — emerging artists — are a dime a dozen and all veering for the same spotlight. Not Father. He's built his own spotlight, and he's built it big enough to also shine on his talented crew. Father's game is minimalism and sensuality. Because of the former, you could listen all day. Because of the latter, you want to.
Each verse Father spits is equal parts honesty and irony, and he has a knack for making the simplest hooks stick with you like a first kiss. Whether that kiss leads to love, lust, confusion, or chaos, we're glad to live in a world where Father and his warped Awful Records cult fight “basic” with "banger."
Father joins us in support of his new record, I’m A Piece Of Shit (March 25) for his debut performance in our Blue Room on April 1st. He will be joined by two other members of his Awful Records collective, Lui Diamonds & Lord Narf. You don't get to be a citizen of the South unless you're down with Atlanta hip hop, and you don't get to be down with Atlanta hip hop unless you know Awful Records, so get your tickets, and don't come whining to us when you don't know what's up.
