Calling all Weirdos, ghouls, and all haunted fools, something wicked this way comes. Third Man Records’ Devil’s Night Party is moving to Detroit! Why? Because it’s also Detroit’s own ITALY RECORDS’ 20th ANNIVERSARY, and if there’s one thing that can make this classic Detroit night even more Detroit, it’s VINYL RECORDS. Legend has it that David Italy and Steve Shaw spent hours and hours and 10s of dollars at the Ren-Cen Kinkos in order to hand deliver finished Rocket 455 singles just in time for their Devil’s Night show of ‘97!

Starting out the undead portion of our triple headlining evening will be muddiest band to ever crawl outta Toledo, Soledad Brothers, in a rare stripped down 2-piece performance! Up next is the un-eff-withable Rocket 455! Italy Records’ first artist!!! These guys don’t mess around... Marc won’t let em. Closing out the Undead performances and celebrating their 25th year is Detroit’s favorite sons The Hentchmen. Don’t worry kiddos, you’re in bad hands with John, Tim and Great Mike. 'MAKE TROUBLE' AVAILABLE ON VINYL 7" TODAY
King of cult John Waters has long been an idol of the the creative hive of maladjusted artsy types here at Third Man Records. We are pleased to release the audio album release of "Make Trouble," Waters' subversive commencement speech published earlier this year by Algonquin Books, and now read by Waters himself. Make Trouble, the record, is available in full digitally today, with a companion 7" single of the same name, featuring Waters' reading of his commencement speech at RISD in its entirety, out today. The recordings are produced by Grammy-winner Ian Brennan (Tinariwen, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Zomba Prison Project).
The speech begins with Waters explaining his qualifications to provide the graduating students the last word of their college education. "I should say right off that I am really qualified to be your commencement speaker. I was suspended from high school, then kicked out of college in the first marijuana scandal ever on the university campus. I've been arrested several times. I've been known to dress in ludicrous fashions. I've also built a career out of negative reviews. And I've been recently called the prince of puke by the press and another title I'm really proud of - the people's pervert."
Waters spoke with NPR's Linda Wertheimer this Spring about the book, the fact that it was written in Obama's America and released in Trump's America, saying, "I don't believe that we should never not talk to people we don't agree with politically. If you can make that person laugh, it's the first step to getting him to listen to change their mind."

July 30th, 1999 found The White Stripes headlining the Magic Bag in fashionable Ferndale, a northern suburb of Detroit. Chosen as a venue mainly to placate the fans who wouldn’t venture to see The White Stripes in rough-and-tumble Detroit, the show would be their first performance after the release of their self-titled debut album. The cushy environs of the Magic Bag provided Jack with an in-house piano, making this the first time that he and Meg would ever incorporate the instrument live. Highlights include their first-ever stab at Bob Dylan’s “Love Sick,” an endearingly unique solo piano rendition of “You’ve Got Her in Your Pocket,” and a simplistic, embryonic rendition of “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground,” all of which provide for a tense performance, filled with equal parts rage and tenderness of which only The White Stripes were capable.
August 18th, 2000 had The White Stripes performing at Detroit’s venerable Magic Stick. Supported by near-and-dear friends (who’d later become bandmates and collaborators), the Greenhornes and Whirlwind Heat, the recording provides a window into the Stripes’ mindset that Summer — just after their West Coast De Stijl headlining tour in June and still yet to experience the insanity of their opening slots for Sleater-Kinney in September. The only known live performance of Captain Beefheart’s “Ashtray Heart” (which they’d just recently laid to tape for eventual release in the Sub Pop Singles Club), a rare live outing for the deep cut “I’m Bound to Pack It Up,” and an electrifying set-ending “Let’s Shake Hands” leave the listener with the palpable sense that something amazing is about to happen for this band.
June 7th, 2001 marked The White Stripes final performance at the Gold Dollar in Detroit. As the first of three hometown headlining shows to support the release of White Blood Cells, the feeling in the air that night was one of excitement and anticipation. In what was arguably the most packed show in Gold Dollar history, Jack and Meg delivered beyond expectations and played their new, soon-to-be critically acclaimed record from front to back. Despite an attempt at tackling Get Behind Me Satan in Chicago in 2005, this would be the ONLY time The White Stripes would perform any of their albums in their entirety. In full command of their powers, The White Stripes proved to be both ascendant and transcendent on this night. This show was the triumphant culmination of the previous five years of gigging in Detroit.
Each LP in this set is pressed on 180-gram vinyl by Third Man Pressing in Detroit and housed in a custom die-cut sleeve that stylistically deconstructs the Stripes’ album released the year that corresponds to the live performance. Additionally, high quality reproduction prints of the Jack White-designed posters for each of these shows will be included. Originally limited to no more than two dozen copies printed (Kinko’s color copies were a buck a pop back then!), posted up at local Detroit record shops and watering holes and summarily torn down and thrown away, original copies of these highly-sought-after pieces have been known to command hundreds of dollars on the secondary market. The copies included here are gorgeous, instantly frame-worthy and much lighter on the pocketbook than the costly originals.
All of these components are lovingly housed in a sturdy slipcase utilizing the rub-on style lettering employed by Jack on a majority of his early flyer designs. SIGN UP NOW... HERE!

The day we promised is upon us! At a record store near you, starting today, you can now purchase The White Stripes Peel Sessions on 2 stuffed-to-the-brim black vinyl records. Capturing Jack and Meg at the precipice of international renown in the hubbub of White Blood Cells, their two live sessions with famed BBC DJ John Peel are arguably the best document of the White Stripes at that time. Having been widely bootlegged since their initial broadcast in 2001, these recordings enjoyed their first authorized release in celebration of their 15 year anniversary on Record Store Day 2016, and we are pleased to now present the standard black vinyl version. With their most recent project, the score for Paterson (2016), SQÜRL (Carter Logan and Jim Jarmusch) took inspiration from their performances live-scoring Man Ray’s surrealist silent films and made a dive into the ocean of ambient electronic music.
The poetry of Jarmusch’s latest fiction film offering requested a slightly different approach in texture, timbre and tone than the band’s usual sound, leading them to employ primarily analog synthesizers and leave drums and guitars behind. Feedback gives way to glass harmonica drones, kick drums to sub-bass punctuation marks. “It’s ambient, dreamy stuff,” Jarmusch told IndieWire while promoting the film’s release.
While a brighter counterpoint to some of SQÜRL’s previous work, including their Live at Third Man Records LP, using some new tools, the band’s purpose has remained to create their own variation on ecstatic music.

Josh Tillman (a.k.a. Father John Misty) will play to a sold-out crowd at Music City's Mother Church the Ryman Auditorium next Tuesday, September 26, in support of his acclaimed new record Pure Comedy (Sub Pop), but fans without tickets need not despair. A free, lunch-hour b-show, featuring Tillman performing solo and acoustic, has been added to his Nashville schedule in our Blue Room.
We will open doors at noon for a 12:30pm short set, which will be recorded by Third Man engineers on the in-house 1955 Scully Lathe for future release. One lucky, randomly-chosen attendee will walk away that day with a 10" vinyl record, cut to disc on-the-spot during the performance.
Food trucks will be on site for those swinging by on their lunch break, and beer will also be available for purchase for those who don't care that they have to go back to work. Black and blue records will be ready for pre-order following the set for those in attendance.
Nashville's Lightning 100 will give away 25 pairs of guaranteed-entry tickets, and the remainder of the Blue Room's capacity will be filled on a first come, first served basis, as space permits, via the Third Man Records box office when doors open for the show.
